Acne

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United Kingdom. Acne vulgaris is one of the most widely known skin complaints, affecting nearly 8 in 10 people at some point in their life. It usually affects teenagers, but can persist into adulthood as well.

The exact cause of acne is not known. However, it is believed to be caused by a combination of factors, such as:

  • Excess Sebum
  • The Plugging of Follicles or Pores
  • The Presence of Bacteria
  • Inflammation

There is no evidence to suggest that acne is caused by eating greasy food, or by not washing enough. Studies have instead shown that people with acne tend to have increased levels of certain hormones. These can cause the sebaceous glands to grow larger and overproduce oil.

Dermatologists know that letting acne run its course is not always the best advice. Here’s why:

  • Without Treatment, Dark Spots and Permanent Scars May Appear on the Skin as Acne Clears
  • Treating Acne Often Boosts a Person’s Self-Esteem
  • Many Effective Treatments Are Available

The Treatment of Acne

  • Topical Retinoids and Benzyl Peroxide
  • Oral Antibiotics

Oral Retinoids — Oral Isotretinoin (Roactuane)

Oral isotretinoin is a potent retinoid medication that is extremely effective in the treatment of severe acne. It cures or significantly improves acne in the most patients. Oral isotretinoin is effective in treating the most disfiguring types of acne.
